One of our latest hospitality projects, Hotel Verde Zanzibar – Azam Luxury Resort & Spa, has opened its doors as Zanzibar’s greenest hotel, to receive its first guests. At Ecolution Consulting, we are proud to have been appointed by the Verde Hotels group as the lead sustainability consultants on the project.
The 106-roomed, five-star hotel was commissioned to Verde Hotels by owner and Zanzibari-born businessman Mr Said Salim Awadh Bakhresa. The hotel is set to lead the way in the green economy sector in East Africa by being a flagship for green technology whilst further developing sustainable tourism as Zanzibar’s greenest hotel.
The hotel is now the second of the Verde Hotels projects on which Ecolution Consulting has spearheaded the sustainability strategy, interventions and initiatives. The first of which was the world renowned Hotel Verde, Africa’s greenest hotel in Cape Town.
Verde Hotels and Ecolution Consulting were able to enter the building phase of Hotel Verde Zanzibar at a timeous point in order to implement the numerous sustainable strategies required to ensure the hotel would be built and operated as sustainably as possible.
The hotel will be offering guests a carbon neutral stay and conferencing experience and has registered with the Green Building Council of South Africa to target a 5 Star Green Star SA as-built certification. Some of the many sustainability interventions include renewable: energy generation, 100% LED lighting, occupancy sensors, grey and black water recycling systems, waste management, demand controlled ventilation, regenerative drive elevators and an intelligent heating ventilation air conditioning (HVAC) system which is highly efficient in heat recovery for the purpose of hot water generation.
Ecolution Consulting’s role:
- Sustainability technology guidance and assistance with implementation
- Management of the energy modelling process
- The building commissioning process
- Green Star submission guidance and management
- Assistance with quantifying the hotel’s carbon footprint to ensure a carbon-neutral stay and conferencing is offered to guests
- Sustainable operations guidance
The hotel is situated 4km from the burgeoning Stone Town and a 2-minute walk to the beach. The 106 rooms offer guests 5-star ultra-luxury standard rooms and luxury suites, a spa, a gym (fully equipped with energy-generating gym equipment), 3 restaurants, conference facilities, entertainment, a gaming room and a kids’ club – all whilst ensuring a sustainable stay. ”
