Set against the scenic backdrop of Hout Bay, the City of Cape Town’s Roads Depot combines functionality with future-minded sustainability. More than just a facility for municipal operations, it’s a showcase of how civic infrastructure can respond to climate challenges while delivering everyday services. Spanning 1,852 m², the depot includes warehouse and office areas, as well as outdoor spaces designed for both practical use and ecological benefit. Completed with a strong focus on environmental performance, the project was proudly awarded a 4-Star Design rating under the Green Star Custom Industrial Tool in July 2025.

The building’s roof hosts a photovoltaic system with 232 solar panels, significantly reducing energy demand from the grid. Water-wise solutions, like rainwater harvesting for vehicle washing and irrigation, are integrated into site operations, while internal water use is curbed through efficient fittings. With daylight access in over half the building and energy-efficient lighting and HVAC systems, occupants benefit from comfort without compromise. Waste is managed responsibly on-site, transport needs are supported with cycling infrastructure and low-emission parking, and thoughtful design ensures that environmental care is part of daily operations. This is sustainable public infrastructure in action.
